Broad band vibration measurement is the most widely used and cost-efficient method for the diagnosis of general machine condition. There are two ISO recommendations concerning machine condition monitoring by this type of measurement, the much used ISO 2372 and the more recent ISO 10816, which is a replacement of the. ISO 10816-1:1995

This standard has been revised by ISO 20816-1:2016

Abstract

Establishes the general conditions and procedures for the measurement and evaluation of vibration, using measurements made on the non-rotating parts of machines. The general evalution criteria relate to both operational monotoring and acceptance testing and have been established primarily with regard to securing reliable long-term operation of the machine. Replaces ISO 2372 and ISO 3945, which have been technically revised.

ISO 2372 (10816) Standards provideguidance for evaluating vibration severity in machines operating in the 10 to200Hz (600 to 12,000 RPM) frequency range. Examples of these types of machinesare small, direct-coupled, electric motors and pumps, production motors, mediummotors, generators, steam and gas turbines, turbo-compressors, turbo-pumps andfans. Some of these machines can be coupled rigidly or flexibly, or connectedthough gears. The axis of the rotating shaft may be horizontal, vertical orinclined at any angle. Use the chart below combined with additional factorsdescribed in this manual to judge the overall vibration severity of yourequipment.

Class l
Individual parts of engines andmachines, integrally connected with the completemachine in its normal operatingcondition. (Production electrical motors of up to 20HP (15 kW) are typical examples ofmachines in this category.)
Medium-sized machines typically, electric motors with 20 to 75 HP (15-75 kW)without special foundations, rigidlymounted engines, or machines on specialfoundations up to 400 HP (300 kW).
Large prime movers and other largemachines with rotating masses mounted onrigid and heavy foundations which arerelatively stiff in the direction of vibrationmeasurement.
Large prime movers and other largemachines with rotating masses mounted onfoundations which are relatively softin the direction of vibration measurement (forexample, turbo-generator sets, especially those with lightweight structures).
Note: These ISO 2372 (10816) Standardclasses do not apply to prime movers or drivenequipment in which the major workingcomponents have a reciprocating motion.

Various industry organizations, such asthe Hydraulic Institute (Table 1, per ANSI/HI 9.6.4), and the AmericanPetroleum Institute (API-610) have set vibration limits to help guide users toavoid excessive levels of vibration in centrifugal pumps. However, since neither of these standards isintended for moderate-speed positive displacement pumps, one can often rely onother, experience-based values. As anexample, the bearing life vs. vibration approximation for general-purposemachinery, Fig. 1 is of interest here.

Natural frequencies of the completelyassembled fan unit shall not be excited at the operating speed. (Running speedshould be at least 25% removed from a natural frequency of the system.)

New and Rebuilt/Repaired Fans shall conformto the vibration limits specified when operating at specified system CFM andFan Static Pressure.

Iso 2372 Vibration Standards

The frequency range for fancertification shall be from Fmin = 0.3 X Running Speed of Fan to 60,000 cpm forvelocity and to 120,000 cpm for acceleration.

For fan speeds up to 3600 RPM, themaximum velocity amplitude (inch/sec-Peak) of vibration at bearing locations inany direction shall not exceed the Line Amplitude Band Limit values specifiedand graphed. When determined in accordance using the frequency range defined.

For fan speeds up to 3600 RPM, theBand-Limited Overall vibration level of acceleration (g's Peak) at bearinglocations in any direction (as defined in Section 4) shall not exceed theBand-Limited Overall Amplitude Acceptance Limit values specified and graphed, when determined in accordance using the frequency range defined.

SENSOR PLACEMENT FOR FANS
Accelerometers are typically placed at key locations on the motor and fan bearings.
Since the bearings are the load carrying part of the mechanical drive train, accelerometers should be placed on the input and output bearing housings to measure the vibration levels.

Vibration sensors should be placed in the radial (vertical & horizontal) and axial locations on the motor and fan bearings.
This will provide the best detection of all vibration components including:
  • bearing vibration
  • unbalance
  • aerodynamic disturbances)
  • belt frequencies
  • misalignment
  • electrical faults
  • blade pass
